Bontrager Aeolus XXX wheelsets launched with tubeless ready clincher disc and rim models
The new wheelsets are offered in 28 mm, 47 mm and 60 mm depths
Waterloo-based Bontrager has updated their line-up of wheels with the Aeolus XXX 2, XXX 4 and XXX 6 carbon wheelsets. Bontrager promises better performance in strong crosswinds, lighter constructions and superior braking with the new wheelsets which are available in rim and disc models. The new high-end wheelsets offer riders on disc brakes more range-topping offerings for all weather riding.
The carbon wheelsets cover the range of depths elite cyclists are most likely to use. The XXX 2 are 28 mm deep and are lightweight for climbers but Bontrager says they are equally proficient on the cyclocross course or on mixed surfaces. The XXX 4 are 47 mm deep and a do-it-all wheelset that provides significant aerodynamic advantages while being light and strong. Finally, the XXX 6 are 60 mm deep and all about aerodynamics and pure speed.
The new wheelsets feature rim shapes that were specifically designed to counter the forces in crosswinds. This should allow riders who want a deep wheel but ride frequently in windy conditions more confidence. Bontrager says they went through 10,000 test shapes before arriving at the final three profiles that combine strength and a lightweight construction. Stability and control in different wind directions is as important as straight on aerodynamics.
The new rims also feature a wide internal rim width for wide tires and confident multi-surface use. All the new rims are 21 mm internally. Included in each clincher wheelset is Bontrager’s TLR rim strip which can quick and easily convert the wheels to a tubeless setup.
The wheelsets come in both disc and rim brake versions with the braking surface on the rim’s laser etched for maximum stopping control. Bontrager says the benchmark was alloy rim stopping performance when designing the Laser Control brake track, specifically in wet conditions. Each wheelset comes in a tubeless ready clincher or tubular version.

The Aeolus XXX have DT-Swiss hub internals with 36-point star ratchets and the rims are laced with DT-Swiss Aerolite spokes. The rim break versions are available now while the disc versions will make their appearence in June. Each wheelset will retail for $1500 front and $1600 rear.
