2016 Canadian road championships to be held in Ottawa and Gatineau

Cycling Canada Canadian Championships

Cycling Canada has announced that the 2016 Canadian road championships will be held in Ottawa and Gatineau June 25-29, 2016 and once again in the national capital region in 2017.

The official name of the event is the Global Relay Canadian road championships. Its organizers are Doug Corner and John Large.

The championships will feature paracycling, junior and elite categories during five consecutive days of racing on both sides of the Ottawa River.

The 2017 edition of the national championships will be tied in with celebrations of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The location for the national championships for masters has not been settled yet. A bidding process is currently underway.

On the mountain bike side, the 2016 cross country national championships will stay in Quebec another year, but in Baie-Saint-Paul. It has hosted many Canada Cup events, included one slated for July 11, and Quebec Cup events. The Club Cycliste Charlevoix is behind the championships set to take place July 14-17, 2016.

It’s a hat trick of sorts for the Sun Peaks Resort in B.C. From July 23-24, 2016, it will host the downhill national champs for the third time in a row. The point person behind that event is Henry Pejril.

BMXers will gather in Calgary for the 2016 Canadian BMX championships from Sept. 2-5, 2016. The Calgary BMX Racing Association has a long history of hosting Canada Cup and Alberta Cup races. “Winning the bid for the 2016 Canadian BMX championship is one more testament to Calgary’s reputation as a year-round sport city,” said Marco De Iaco, vice-president, sport and major events at Tourism Calgary. “Not only do events like these provide benefits to a growing sport tourism industry, they provide branding and promotional opportunities for the city of Calgary. We look forward to supporting the Calgary BMX Racing Association in the planning and delivery of an exceptional event.”

Mountain bike marathoners will also have some continuity next year. They will race once again at Ontario’s Horseshoe Resort, organized by SuperFly Racing.

Cycling Canada is planning to announce the 2016 Canadian c for track cycling and cyclocross at a later date.
