Defending Tour of Alberta champion Bauke Mollema (The Netherlands/Trek-Segafredo) was first in Sunday’s time trial in Edmonton, putting himself into second place on GC with one stage remaining. American Robin Carpenter jumped up from second to nick the yellow jersey from compatriot Evan Huffman. The race is poised on a knife edge as Carpenter leads Mollema by a single second.

Even with the 2-km climb in the second half of the course, the route would favour a powerhouse who could dish it out over a short distance.

Mollema was sixth in the long Tour de France time trial. He started the day 18 seconds behind Huffman (Rally), while Carpenter was two seconds back.

Riders weren’t riding chrono machines, but regular bikes with deep-rim wheels. Jesse Anthony of Rally was the first to leave the start house at 5:15 local time.

Appropriately, in his final time trial, Ryder Hesjedal set the best time of 15:03.09 after starting 20th.

Canadian chrono champ Ryan Roth (Silber) was all over his bike, stopping the clock at 15:31. Rob Britton (Canada/Silber) was 15:24.

To everyone’s surprise, Latvian Andzs Flaksis of Holowesko-Citadel cracked Hesjedal’s high mark with 14:53. Top Canadian on GC Alexander Cataford (Silber) stepped up to 5th position with a good ride of 15:15.

Mollema was going all out and eclipsed Flaksis with 14:44. Stage 1 winner and first yellow jersey wearer Colin Joyce (USA/Axeon Hagen Berman) posted a 15:13. But Carpenter’s 15:09 kept him just ahead of Mollema on GC.

Huffman’s 15:08 kept him on the podium and he retains the red points jersey.

Eleven laps of downtown Edmonton on Labour Day concludes the 2016 Tour of Alberta.
