Cycling at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, Ont., just outside Toronto, has had a banner year. For one, there was the official unveiling of the park’s Pan Am BMX Centre in July, a legacy project of the Pan Am Games. Its banking, rolling, high-flying course hosted the world’s top BMXers, and gave Canada’s best the chance to shine on home soil.

This past weekend, the adjacent grasslands of the park itself hosted a different kind of cycling competition, as Toronto Cross — the third event in the Ontario Cup cyclocross series, presented by Midweek Cycling Club — got underway on Sunday.

Racing was divided into several competitions, ranging from U17 to Elite, Master and single-speed, with several other classifications in the mix. Highlights — and there were many — included the 15 kilometre Elite 4 and Master 3 men’s race, which saw top riders from Waterloo Cycling Company, Bateman’s Bicycle Company, and Morning Glory Cycling team finish a fast, mixed-classification ride within a single second of each other. Adam Myers of Waterloo Cycling took the win, posting a time of 39:20, while Gregory Connor of Bateman’s took second and Rolston Miller of Morning Glory third, each with a time of 39:21.

Separately, the win in the Elite 4 category went to Connor, with his winning time of 39:21, while Matthew Dempster of Lantern Rouge took the second podium spots sixteen seconds behind, and Sean Poulter, riding for Lapdogs Cycling Club in third, 29 seconds back.

Competitors in other classifications turned in similarly powerful performances — especially the kids of the U17 class.

That, of course, only scratches the surface of the the weekend’s competition of Toronto Cross. A full breakdown of results, representing all the competing classifications, can be viewed online at ontariocycling.org, or by following this link.
