The Giro d’Italia is long over, but the hits keep coming for Israel – Premier Tech’s Derek Gee. If you’ve just come back from Jupiter, you may have missed the 25-year-old’s incredible ride in Italy. Four seconds, two fourths, and almost 1,000 km in breakaways resulted in everyone in cycling media calling him “the revelation of the Giro.” (No seriously, Google that. Every single outlet called him that. Even the fine folks at Canadian Cycling Magazine. Because that’s what he was.)

He also placed second in the KOM, second in the points, and second in the intermediate sprints. He did win the combativity award. As he joked about on the CCM podcast, he also got two more seconds by placing 22nd overall. Get it? Two 2s.

On Saturday, the Giro d’Italia organization presented its awards over and above the various competitions. Mark Cavednish won the best sprint. Ben Healy took the best break. Val di Zoldo won the best summit finish. (I’m sure Mr. and Mrs. di Zoldo are very proud.)

And our man Gee was awarded “The Best 2023 Revelation Rider,” surprising absolutely no one. (Except maybe Gee, as he is one of the humblest riders in the peloton.)

Gee will do one more race before taking a well-deserved break. On Sunday, he will jump into the Brussels Cycling Classic. The team wants to see how well he recovers from a Grand Tour, but after that, he’s got some time to relax and get ready for the rest of the season.
