Former professional cyclist Alberto Contador needed several stitches to his face after a nasty fall at the Desafío Beijing by La Vuelta. Contador, 40, retired from the sport in 2017 and now co-owns the Eolo-Kometa ProTeam. The squad was launched in 2018 as a Continental team, and got a PT licence in 2021. At the 2023 Giro d’Italia, Davide Bais (EOLO-Kometa) took a big win for the team on Stage 7, the 218-km race from Capua to Gran Sasso d’Italia.

The Spanish rider was riding the new event that is out on by Sunday Vuelta a España when he hit the deck. Contador, who won all three Grand Tours, went down and hit his face first. As well as several cuts to his face, he also had a black eye. After the race, he posted on Instagram letting fans know that he looked far worse than it appeared.

“Hi everyone. Today I went down Desafío China by La Vuelta. There was a crash in front of me and, as much as I tried to jump over the rider in front of me, it was impossible.I’m sending this video to transmit calmness,” the post read. “Despite the images, fortunately it’s not as bad as it looks. Just a few stitches to the eyebrow, cheek, and lip. We’ll keep on going.”

Contador also thanked former ex-pro riders Pedro Delgado and Joaquím Rodríguez for being there to assist after his wipe-out.

The Spanish rider posted a slow motion video of the crash and posted it alongside his message to fans.
