Barrette earns top-10 in keirin at Santiago, Chile track World Cup

Powerhouse part of Canadian trio in Chile

Milton Track World Cup

One week after Canada’s triumphs at the third round of the UCI track World Cup in Milton, Ontario, two members of Team Canada were back in action at the Santiago, Chile event on Saturday. Hugh Barrette followed up his fourth and sixth in the Milton individual sprint and keirin with tenth place in the Santiago keirin. Amelia Walsh made it into the 1/8 place round of the women’s individual sprint.

After Milton, Cycling Canada sent a trio of athletes to Santiago: Barrette, Walsh and Aiden Caves. In early November Caves was the only Canadian in Manchester, England’s second round. He will contest the omnium on Sunday.

Barrette was relegated in his qualifying heat. The same thing happened to him in 2014 at the London round of the World Cup. As in London, he had a chance to advance to the first round via the repechage, and was first in his heat. The first round saw him come fourth, which put him in the 7-12 race, where he took 10th. The gold went to Japan’s Yuta Wakimoto. Having only raced half the World Cup keirins, Barrette sits 14th all around.

Walsh’s 15th fastest time in individual sprint qualifying granted her a spot in the 1/16. There, Walsh defeated Malaysian Farina Shiwati Mohd Adnan of the Sime Darby Foundation. The 1/8 had the Canadian matched with Kiwi Natasha Hansen, who was a little too quick for Walsh. With German Katrina Vogel not in the event, the door was open for Ukrainian Liubov Basova to nab the victory.

In other events, the Kiwis won the women’s team pursuit and men’s madison, the Russians claimed the men’s team sprint and phenom Yumi Kajihara took gold in the women’s omnium for the second week in the row, this time defeating Italian Elisa Balsalmo by a single point.
