BC Grand Prix of Cyclocross: Kabush and Pendrel double up in South Surrey

Cyclocross

The day after Geoff Kabush (Scott-3Rox Racing) and Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team) won national cyclocross championships in South Surrey, B.C., the two returned to the muddy course on Sunday after a night of heavy rain to triumph in the Hansen Industries BC Grand Prix of Cyclocross. While the BCGPCX’s elite men’s race had the same runner-up as Saturday, Edmonton’s Aaron Schooler (Team H&R Block), the elite women’s side found Nanaimo, B.C.’s Wendy Simms stepping up from third in the nationals to second behind Pendrel by only 37 seconds.

Evan McNeely (Norco Factory Team) scrapped hard to rise from sixth on Saturday to Sunday’s podium just ahead of Kabush’s Scott-3Rox teammate Derek Zandstra, who was fourth in both contests. Zandstra came good at the end of the race, posting the only sub-9:00 last two laps to overtake Michael van den Ham (Cycle Smart), Saturday’s under-23 Canadian champion.

Gatineau, Quebec’s Natasha Elliott (Rare Vos Racing) jumped from fourth in the national race up onto the BC Grand Prix podium, with Coquitlam, B.C.’s Sandra Walter (LIV/giant Canada) 44 seconds in arrears of Elliott.

The South Surrey Athletic Park will now take a well-earned rest before endeavouring to become firm ground and grass once more.
