B.C. Superweek – Tour de Delta

UBC Grand Prix July 10, Gastown Grand Prix July 11, Giro di Burnaby July 12 and the Tour de White Rock July 13-15.

B.C. Superweek kicked off this weekend with the Tour de Delta held from July 6-8. It will continue with the UBC Grand Prix on July 10, Gastown Grand Prix on July 11, Giro di Burnaby on July 12 and the Tour de White Rock from July 13-15. The event offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes and hosts over 5,000 spectators at each race.

Stage one, MK Delta Lands Criterium:

Svein Tuft (Orica-GreenEdge) won the opening stage of the Tour de Delta, a three-day race apart of BC Superweek. Tuft made a solo move halfway through the stage one MK Delta Lands Criterium, and took the win ahead of a group sprint led by Florenz Knauer (Team Baier Lanshut) in second place and Tommy Nankervis (Competitive Cyclist) in third.

Nicky Wangsgard (Primal-Map My Ride) won the women’s criterium from a bunch sprint ahead of Stephanie Roorda (Local Ride-Dr. Vie Superfoods) in second and Jenny Lehmann (Trek Red Truck) in third.

Stage two, Brenco Criterium:

Ryan Anderson (SpiderTech p/b C10) won stage two’s Brenco Criterium after a bunch sprint ahead of Steve Fisher (Hagens Berman) in second and Nankervis in third.”

“This crowd feels like a race of Europe,” Anderson said. “I still get a bit nervous because I’m back home and racing in front of family and I want to do well.”

Roorda improved on the previous day’s second place by winning the Brenco Criterium. She out-sprinted a small group ahead of Joanie Caron (Colavita-espnW) in second and Lehmann in third.

“The last lap, teammate Lisa [Howard] and I were set up third and fourth wheel and the Trek team started to move on the right and I said to Lisa ‘go’ and she was my lead-out and she went as hard as she could and brought me to last corner and I just jumped from there,” Roorda said. “I knew if I was first around the last corner I had a really good shot at the win.”

Stage three, White Spot Road Race:

Fisher ended the Tour of Delta with a victory during stage three’s White Spot Road Race. The amateur-level racer out-paced pros Jesse Anthony (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) in second and Dominik Roels (HED p/b Staps) in third.

“This is definitely my biggest result ever,” Fisher said. “It’s an awesome experience just to be racing with those guys, and better if you can beat them on a single day. I am a little pleasantly surprised but I knew I was capable so I told my teammates that and they really rode all out for me.”

Morgan Cabot (Glotman Simpson Cycling) won the women’s race ahead of Roorda, who finished on the podium during all three stages, and Kate Finegan (Independent).
