B.C. Superweek – UBC Grand Prix

Svein Tuft and Stephanie Roorda top Elite events

Svein Tuft (Orica-GreenEdge) and Stephanie Roorda (Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods) won their respective Elite races at the UBC Grand Prix on July 10. The event is part of the prestigious B.C. Superweek held this week.

Roorda won the Elite women’s race after a solo breakaway. Loren Rowney (Specialized-lululemon) placed second after out-sprinting Nicky Wansgard (Primal-May My Ride) in third.

Tuft won the Elite men’s race out of a two-man move against Dominik Roels (HED p/b Staps), who placed second on the day. Hilton Clarke (UnitedHealthcare) won the bunch sprint for third place ahead of Alex Candelario (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Tommy Nankervis (Competitive Cyclist).

“It was so hard especially in the beginning,” said Roels. “Svein was pushing and I was really, really suffering to hold on.”

B.C. Superweek kicked off with the Tour de Delta from July 6-8 and, after a day’s rest, continued with the UBC Grand Prix. Gastown Grand Prix on July 11 followed by the Giro di Burnaby on July 12 and the Tour de White Rock from July 13-15. The event offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes and hosts over 5,000 spectators at each race.
