Bixi program coming to Toronto, but commitment needed from riders

Montreal-based rental-bike system looking for 1,000 subscribers for Toronto expansion

After seeing success with similar programs in Paris, Berlin and Barcelona, the Bixi city bike program is coming to Toronto in 2011. It will be modelled after the Montreal setup, where 5,000 bikes are available for rent from one of 400 stations. Riders can pick up a bike in one spot and return it in another. If the trip is under 30 minutes, its free for subscribers to the program.

Subscriptions cost $28 per month or $78 per year and the organizers of the Toronto expansion wants to ensure it has 1,000 subscribers by Nov. 30 before moving forward with the $5.4 million project.
