Brian Cookson to announce three-person independent commission

International Cycling Union (UCI) president Brian Cookson will soon announce the three people who will make up the independent commission and investigate past doping transgressions in the sport of cycling. The investigation is expected to uncover “dynamite” evidence from the computer files seized from the governing body’s headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, reports the Daily Mail online.

The independent truth and reconciliation commission was delayed and rescheduled to start its investigation at the beginning of this year. It will examine the history of doping in cycling and the UCI’s involvement in alleged coverups, including Lance Armstrong’s allegations that officials helped riders avoid testing positive for banned substances.

In 2012, Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from Olympic sports for life after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s Reasoned Decision investigation pointed to him as the leader of a longterm doping scandal.

Cookson hopes that Armstrong will take part in the truth and reconciliation process, however, his participation is pending due to the ongoing U.S. federal whistleblower lawsuit filed by his ex-teammate Floyd Landis.
