Brother of Oscar winner, Sir Mark Rylance, killed by motorist when cycling

Sir Mark Rylance’s brother Jonathan Waters was killed in a collision when on his bike in Oakland last week. He suffered severe head injuries and died the next morning in the hospital.

After being struck by a driver, the local fire department rushed to the scene, where Waters received immediate treatment. Waters was 60 years old. Sir Mark Rylance, who won an Oscar Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rudolf Abel in Bridge of Spies in 2015. He posted about his brother’s death when he had to explain why he was cancelling a performance of the West End production of Jerusalem over the weekend.

“I am so sorry to tell you that on the 28th of May my dear brother Jonathan Waters was knocked from his bicycle and tragically died of his injuries,” Rylance posted. “In order to attend his funeral in California, I unfortunately have to miss three performances of Jerusalem over Saturday 11th to Sunday 12th June. As I have no understudy to play the role Rooster Johnny Byron, sadly these performances have been cancelled.”
