Cadel Evans confirmed for Quebec ProTour races

RadioShack, Garmin, Team Sky, Columbia HTC, Saxo Bank among powerhouse teams coming to Canada

The current world champion has confirmed his attendance in the Quebec City and Montreal ProTour races being held in September. The events’ organizers released the names of the teams participating in the UCI-sanctioned events Sept. 10 and 12, and among them are the BMC squad including reigning world champ Cadel Evans. In all, 22 teams, including four wildcards, are confirmed for the two races.

Canada will be well-represented with a national team also getting the nod. Steve Bauer was hoping to get an invite for his SpiderTech Powered by Planet Energy squad, but instead, he will serve as the directeur sportif for the Canadian team, which has picked up sponsorship from SpiderTech and will include a large number of Bauer’s team riders.

Bauer said the races will be a big test for the Canadian contingent.

“The experience of the ProTour circuit is sure to benefit our Canadian athletes. Competing against the best riders on the planet will help them raise the calibre of racing in this country,” he said.

This year marks the first of a five-year contract between Grand Prix Cycliste ProTour Quebec-Montreal and the UCI to bring the events to Canada.

“People from Québec and elsewhere in Canada will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see these élite road racers compete in their backyard, for free, with iconic heritage sites as backdrops: Old Québec City and the Plains of Abraham, as well as Mount Royal,” said Serge Arsenault, president of the organizing company.
