With an infusion of federal funding through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, upgrades and expansions are coming for a popular cycling route in Scugog township within the municipality of Durham.

The amount Durham region has received through the Canada 150 program, durhamregion.com reports, is a cool $409,530.

The funding will enhance the Regional Road 8 cycling route between Uxbridge and Port Perry, Ont., largely thanks to a planned expanded shoulder to allow more room for cyclists to ride. Along with the new and broader shoulders, the road itself will receive a major overhaul, too, with the surface condition restored. Once finished, cyclists, reports say, will be able to traverse the Scugog area more directly

Officials are “thrilled” at the possibilities that funding through the federal development program—part of Canada 150 Celebrates, the Canadian government’s official celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday—will offer the region. “Durham region offers excellent routes for cyclists of all ages,” said Celina Caesar-Chavanne, Whitby’s member of parliament, when making the announcement.

“The expansion of Regional Road 8 cycling route will provide cycling enthusiasts with additional options to enjoy this scenic stretch of our local landscape.”
