Canada to get world-class BMX track

Canadian BMX racers will finally get a permanent, world-class track to race and train on.

Canadian BMX racers will finally get a permanent, world-class track to race and train on.

A Super Cross track will be built in Abbotsford, B.C., thanks to a partnership between the Canadian Cycling Association, Cycling BC, the City of Abbotsford, the Abbotsford BMX Club, B2ten and the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific.

The track — particularly the start ramp — will meet international standards for world cups, world championships and Olympic Games.

“I’m excited that we are getting a world class track to train on,” said BMX national team member Tory Nyhaug in a CCA media release. “This is critical for World Cup preparations, especially with the Olympic Games right around the corner.”

The track is due to open in time to host UCI races on June 4 and 5. The bulk of the $130,000 construction cost is being underwritten by B2ten, a private-sector charitable organization that supports Canadian athletes and sports organizations.

The Abbotsford BMX Club will build, maintain and operate the track for the next 20 years, as well as host international events in collaboration with CyclingBC and the CCA. The City of Abbotsford will provide track access to the club.

“This is a fantastic step forward for BMX in Canada. Abbotsford BMX and the entire Province of British Columbia is proud to have this opportunity to participate in the creation of world-class athletes, and the facilities to underpin their efforts,” said Abbotsford BMX Club president Steve Baxter.
