Cancellara wins Tour de Suisse prologue

Hesjedal among those preparing for Tour de France

Leopard-Trek’s Fabian Cancellara was victorious in the 7.1 km time trial prologue in the Tour de Suisse today, finishing nine seconds ahead of American Tejay Van Garderen of HTC.

Ryder Hesjedal is among the many riders using this stage race, along with the Dauphiné Libéré, to fine-tune their form for the Tour de France in July. Heavy hitters like last year’s winner Frank Schleck and his brother Andy, Hesjedal’s teammate Christian Vande Velde, Liquigas’s Peter Sagan and the formidable Radioshack trio of Klöden, Horner and Leipheimer are all in Switzerland.

Mark Cavendish leads the field of sprinters looking for wins. Also contesting will be Garmin-Cervelo’s Thor Hushovd, Saxo’s Baden Cooke, Sky’s Greg Henderson, Andre Greipel of Omega and Radioshack’s duo of Robbies – McEwen and Hunter. First class raiders Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) and Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step) will look to ruin the day for the sprinters.
