Chausson and Clementz win Chilean Enduro World Series race

Anne Caroline Chausson and Jérôme Clementz won the women’s and men’s divisions at the opening round of the Enduro World Series in Nevados de Chillan, Chile. Riders raced on six stages split over two full days of racing, starting atop volcanic mountains and racing to the forested valley floor below.

Chausson put in a dominant performance, winning five of the six stages. Defending world champion Tracey Mosely did not have a counter to Chausson’s speed, and finished second more than a minute back of the French rider.

Third place went to Cecile Ravanel, who moved up from fourth place on the second day of action.

Clementz showed a clear understanding of the format of endure. Despite not winning any of the six stages, the defending men’s world champion set the lowest overall time to place first overall.

Jared Graves held the lead for much of the event, but couldn’t stop losing time to Clementz. Graves finished second overall, just over eight seconds back. Florian Nicolai finished third overall.

Vancouver resident Josh Carlson suffered a crash in training and was unable to race the first round of the series.

French rider and two time downhill world champion Fabien Barel suffered a crash early on the first day. He reported feeling like he cracked his ribs, but finished the day. On the second day of racing, Barel woke to worsening and more centralized pain, and decided to seek medical attention.

“The 8th dorsal vertebrae is badly broken at 1.2mm of the spine and where the nerves connecting all legs movements are,” Barel posted on Facebook. “I am a lucky man (sic), but that was a close call!”

The Enduro World Series continues in Scotland, at the TweedLove Festival, May 30-June 1.
