Chernove adds another silver to Canada’s tally at UCI paracycling track world’s

Cranbrook athlete doubles down with second medal this week in Rio

Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, B.C. added a silver medal to his growing collection on Friday at UCI Paracycling track world championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The medal adds to the gold he won Thursday in the men’s C2 individual sprint. Canada now has three medals from Rio, just two days into competition at the Velodromo Municipal do Rio, the same velodrome that hosted the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Chernove came into the 1000 metre time trial for C2 men as the defending champion and was looking to repeat his title defense in the Individual Pursuit a day earlier. A slow start, though, derailed his efforts early and even setting the fastest time on his remaining three laps was not enough to make up for the opening lap error. “I’m glad I didn’t fall in my slip and wobble on the opening lap, but it cost me some time,” admitted Chernove. Alejandro Perea Arango of Colombia was able to capitalize on Chernova’s wobble, taking the gold by 0709 seconds. Though disappointed to lose his title, Chernove remained positive, encouraged by the growth in the sport. “It was amazing to see a new competitor in the C2 category, the Colombian who won,” said the Canadian after his event. “A great addition to the C2 athletes and I’m looking forward to racing him in the near future.”

Ross Wilson of Edmonton, Alta. was the only other Canadian rider to compete in Rio on Friday. Wilson finished fourth in the men’s C1 1000 metre time trial behind Zhangyu Li of China, the reigning Paralympic champion.
