The Enduro World Series opens the 2014 season this weekend, in Nevados de Chillan, Chile. Held April 19-20, stages will start among the otherworldly steaming vents of the volcanic cone nearby the Nevados de Chillan bike park.

Riders will race down the mountain, finishing in the valley forests below. Total stage times are expected to range somewhere between 40-50 minutes.

Vancouver-based Josh Carlson is fresh from a win at the Sea Otter Enduro. Carlson closed out 2013 as the top ranked rider from North America, and is looking to build on that success this season.

An endure race was hosted in La Parva, Chile last week, providing an opportunity for South American riders to warm up for the EWS event. Defending EWS champion Jérôme Clementz won the event handily.

In the women’s division, reigning champion Tracey Mosely is likely to face her biggest challenge in the form of Anne Caroline Chausson, who lost her shot at the 2013 title after an early-season injury.

The EWS is made up of seven events, including a Canadian stop in August, as part of the Whistler Crankworx festival.
