Chloe Dygert of the U.S.A. wins second elite women’s time trial world championship

Both Canadian entrants finish in top 25

Chloe Dygert of the U.S.A. took her second rainbow jersey in the elite women’s time trial Thursday at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Dygert’s first title was in 2019. The top Canadian was Olivia Baril in 19th.

The Junior Women

Earlier in the day, 42 Junior women took on a truncated, 13-km version of the route the U23 Men rolled Wednesday and the Elite Women would face later. Australia’s Felicity Wilson-Haffenden claimed the rainbow jersey, with Brit Izzy Sharp silver and Italian Federica Venturelli rounding out the podium. The top Canadian was Nora Linton in 14th. Another Canuck, Éloïse Camiré, was 24th.

The Elite Women’s Course

Eighty-six Elite Women faced the same course as the U23 Men on Wednesday. Northeast of Glasgow in Stirling, they would roll 36.2 km, with a sharp little rise up to the finish at the castle, the last 400 metres of which was cobbled. The course held three intermediate time checks.

The Canadian contingent was Olivia Baril and Paula Findlay.

Finn Lotta Henttala, who crashed about 200 metres from the finish line, posted the first time of 53:23. A few riders topped Henttala, but it would be 2019 champion Chloe Dygart of the U.S.A. who threw down the gauntlet with 46:59.

With all the riders having left the start house, and the intermediate time checks coming in, it seemed unlikely that anyone would beat Dygert. One of the favourites, Swiss Marlen Reusser, climbed off the bike. However, the silver medal spot swapped hands several times over a ten minute period.

When Baril finished, she was provisionally seventh.

Aussie Grace Brown would come closest to Dygert, finishing five seconds down.

Friday is reserved for the Junior and Elite men chronos.
