City of Edmonton to plow bike lanes throughout the winter

The-City-of-Edmonton-Logo1On Wednesday, the City of Edmonton announced that it will plow the bike lanes on certain major corridors within city limits. City maintenance workers are to ensure that there is a bike lane that is no less than 1 m wide on the designated streets. The city’s hope is that bicycle commuters will still have a safe lane to travel in. According to the City of Edmonton, this effort serves as a pilot project to encourage bicycle commuters to continue using their bicycles during the winter months

This project is also meant to allow city planners to better understand what is needed in order to maintain bicycle lanes throughout the winter. Edmonton is using other major winter cities as a benchmark to compare its efforts. The hope is to learn valuable lessons over the winter on how to streamline maintenance processes to improve conditions for winter commuters. The city of Edmonton hopes to meet the demands of drivers as well as cyclists.
