Compton, Mourey win cyclocross World Cup in Namur

American Katie Compton (Trek) and Frenchman Francis Mourey (FDJ.fr) won round four of the UCI World Cup cyclocross series on Sunday.  The race took place in Namur, Belgium, in cold and wet weather conditions.

Mourey broke away mid-race and won the elite men’s event by nearly half a minute ahead of Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) and Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus).

Canada’s Aaron Schooler (H&R Block), runner-up at the national cyclocross championships, finished the race in 48th place and Mike Garrigan (Van Dessel) in 51st, two laps behind the race winner.

Lars van der Haar (Rabobank Development Team) is currently leading the World Cup overall standings with 257 points.

Compton won the elite women’s race by 40 seconds ahead of the current world champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank Women Cycling Team) and Nikki Harris (Young Telenet-Fidea).

Compton increased her lead in the World Cup overall standings to 230 points.

The World Cup series began in October in Valkenburg, Netherlands. It moved on to round two in Tabor, Czech Republic, and round three in Koksijde, Belgium.

The fifth round will be held on Dec. 26 in Heusden-Zolder, also in Belgium. Round six will held on Jan. 5 in Rome, Italy followed by round seven on Jan. 26 in Nommay, France. The cyclocross world championships will be held on Feb. 1 and 2 in Hoogerheide, Netherlands, ending the 2013-14 season.
