CRTC to consider specialty cycling channel

Fans of cycling in Canada could be in for more of the activity they love.

Arrond, a Toronto-based company has an application in to the CRTC to be granted a licence to create a TV channel to showcase all aspects of cycling. The man behind the application is Andrew Kowalchuck, a veteran of the broadcast TV industry.

“When I tried to interest people in the TV industry in cycling, they told me, ‘no one cares about it, no one understands it, and it’s boring,’” recalls Kowalchuk. “I don’t share that view.”

Cyclists who would like to see a specialty channel have two days to file letters of support with the CRTC ahead of a hearing next month. Kowalchuk has created letter templates, and has provided part of his vision for what he hopes Cycling TV could become.

“One of the things I really want to support, a point I think is really important, is that there’s so much to cycling beyond racing,” said Kowalchuk. “I want to showcase all aspects of cycling; commuting, recreation, travel and sport.”

A licence is an important first step in the process. If he’s successful, the next step will be to negotiate with cable providers to include the channel in their roster. He’ll also have to fill a programming schedule.

“Do I think a show about cycle tourism in Canada would be great? Of course. I’d love to see a show about how to work on your own bike, or shows that follow race teams and athletes through their season. Ultimately the audience will determine what we show.”

But the other question is whether people will pay for a cycling specialty channel. So far, the answer is uncertain.
