Cycling community hopes to revive Wind-Del Park velodrome

Members of Hamilton’s cycling community are asking the city to rebuild the velodrome in Windham Centre, On., for cyclists to be able to use it as a recreational facility, for training and to develop youth cycling. The forty-year-old paved Wind-Del track hasn’t been properly maintained and is cracked and bumpy, rendering it nearly unusable.

“We see it as a good opportunity,” said Rick Lee, manager of the National Cycling Centre Hamilton in the Delhinewsrecord.com report. “We think (a rebuild) would be fantastic . . . We would give it a lot of use.”

Charlottesville Coun. Jim Oliver has started a drive to find out if the community is interested in keeping the track. “We shouldn’t give up on this facility yet,” he said. “The velodrome to me is an important part of that destination Norfolk County might be for cyclists.”

Reviving the track would cost upwards of $100,000, based on 15-year-old study. Oliver hopes the council will fund a portion of that cost, while sponsors and a potential Ontario Trillium grant would fund the rest.
