Cycling in Canada: The ultimate long-haul Canadian hammerfest from coast to coast

There's one thing that unites us all as cyclists: a thirst for adventure. Perhaps the best expression of that adventure is to ride across Canada, the second-largest country in the world.

Whether it’s a personal time trial, riding to a grocery store across town to pick up a carton of milk, group riding in the spring, or simply taking a joyride through the snow and the sleet of winter, there’s one thing that unites us all as cyclists: a thirst for adventure.

Perhaps the best expression of that adventure is to ride across Canada, the second-largest country in the world.

Many do it for different reasons, some for charity, some just for the hell of it. Whatever the motivation, though, it’s hard to deny that the ultimate Canadian hammerfest is experiencing its changing landscape from the saddle from coast to coast to coast, getting to know the character and the geography of the country in the intimate way that only a bike can allow.

These days, in the deepest part of winter, such an idea can seem like a lifetime away. While you train for the group rides, trails or bikepacking trips of summer, though—something we discuss in our most recent issue—let the experience of this rider inspire your efforts. Andre Melchers took a cross-Canada trip by bike in the summer of 2014, and documented it for YouTube.

We know, we can’t wait for that magical, adventurous time of year, either—not that a good cycling adventure can’t be enjoyed during the winter, of course.
