According to an article published last Friday in The Province, a cyclist has been ordered to pay $226,000 in damages to a sushi chef from Vancouver. John Yang, a 61-yea- old father of two was taken to hospital after Claude Ritchie accidentally ran into him. Ritchie was on his bicycle in Burnaby Central Park. Yang who was walking was struck from behind by Ritchie. Yang suffered an unfortunate injury to his hand and wrist. As a result, he has been unable to continue his career as prominent sushi chef in the lower mainland area. Prior to the accident, Yang had enjoyed a 25-year career that had made him well known in the area.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lauri Ann Fenlon ruled that it is clear that Jang’s pain and suffering was a result of the accident. Additionally, because of the unfortunate incident in May 2007, Jang’s career as a sushi chef is no longer a viable profession. Ritchie who did not attend the trial was found by the judge to be negligent and has been ordered to pay $226,000 in damages.
