Cyclists petition for better bike infrastructure in Victoria

For Winnipeg cyclists, using bike routes is about to be a lot safer with a bylaw's help.

A cyclist has started an online petition that asks city council to create better cycling infrastructure in Victoria. The city is expected to make updates to the city bicycle master plan this spring.

The cyclist, Tom Berkhout, and his friends launched bikevictoria.ca last week, as reported in the metronews.ca. The website petition is pushing to make Victoria a more bike-friendly place for everyone. The website cites a lack of cycling infrastructure as a major deterrent in getting people out riding their bikes.

“Things like the painted lines beside cars are OK, but that’s more 1990s early 2000 thinking and there’s been a lot more work done since that time to realizing that to get biking accessible for everyone, we need to step it up in terms of  the kinds of infrastructure we develop,” Berkhout said.

“If you look at some of the leading edge practices today, you’ve got more divided barriers between cyclists and cars in heavy traffic areas, and  instead of putting bike routes on busy roads, you make your bike network using secondary roads, more residential roads.”
