Cyclocross champ Geoff Kabush comes home

Coming into the Canadian cyclocross championships, defending champ Geoff Kabush will be very close to home. After residing in the U.S. to help with training efforts, Kabush has relocated to North Vancouver. With much of his fall spent on the road, or packing and unpacking, Kabush hopes he’s held onto the form he needs to win.

“I’ve definitely had a busy fall, but I’ve been having a lot of fun road tripping, travelling around and transitioning back to being based in Canada,” said Kabush, who helped run a ‘cross clinic this past weekend as part of a new business venture, Catalyst Kinetics.

“Riding and training has been a little inconsistent, but I’m definitely hoping to hold onto some form and defend my cyclocross national title for Scott-3Rox Racing. I’m finally getting settled at my new home base in North Vancouver, which should help make things a little simpler moving forward.”

Kabush has been an ardent fan and competitor in cyclocross, and while on occasion, he’s raced in costume, this event will be a little more focused. Kabush will be joined by Scott-3Rox teammates Cameron Jette and Canadian mountain bike champion Derek Zandstra. While both should prove strong competition, Kabush knows the field will be deep.

“There is a host of other talented riders I won’t count out but it is always a wild card seeing what form people are carrying at this time of year,” said Kabush. “I’m hoping the weather and course will be a big factor and it is an exciting race for everyone to watch.”

Being close to home and the new business means Kabush will find a few new experiences at this year’s nationals.

“I’m definitely looking forward not to have to get on a plane. I can count the number of races on one hand I’ve been able to drive to from home in the last decade so it is definitely special.”

Additionally, the work Kabush is doing with Catalyst means helping a young rider development program. Many up-and-coming riders will be competing at nationals, and Kabush plans to keep an eye on how they perform.
