Driver in California deliberately hits cyclists in rampage, killing one
Police say there were three separate incidents with same motorist
Police in Huntington Beach, Calif., are on the hunt for a motorist they suspect intentionally hit bicyclists in three separate incidents that occurred within an hour on Sunday evening. Two riders sustained injuries, while the third was killed, according to a report in the L.A. Times.
Authorities are currently seeking the unknown driver of a black Toyota four-door sedan, as described by witnesses, which appears to have sustained damage to its front passenger-side bumper
“We believe that the incidents are related because the three locations are close in proximity and also based on the victims’ and witnesses’ statements,” Jessica Cuchilla, a Huntington Beach police spokesperson, said. “They all described a similar vehicle.”
The initial incident is believed to have occurred at 10 p.m. A male cyclist was struck while crossing the intersection. The driver left the scene, and the cyclist sustained minor injuries.
Around half an hour later, authorities received a report of another hit-and-run involving a cyclist. The cyclist involved in the second incident claimed to have been intentionally side-swiped by a fleeing driver. Police confirmed minor injuries and provided on-site treatment.
While officers were investigating this incident, another report came in within about 15 minutes. In this instance, the motorist is alleged to have fatally struck the cyclist, according to police.
As of Monday afternoon, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department coroner was in the process of reaching out to the family of the deceased cyclist. The cyclist’s identity has not been disclosed, and there is no more information about the investigation at this point.
