Dutch rider Mark Groeneveld on X-Speed United dies at 20

Cause of death not yet known, heart attack suspected

Mark Groeneveld, a Dutch rider on the Canadian X-Speed United Continental team died in Hong Kong on Sunday. The 20-year-old was racing the Hong Kong Cyclothon, a 1.1 road race.

Groeneveld didn’t finish the event, as he was forced to quit the race early due to a mechanical.

After the race, Groeneveld collapsed in public, and it is believed that he had a heart attack. Emergency services arrived but were not able to save the young cyclist. An autopsy has been ordered to find out more about the cause of death.

This was his first year with the team, having raced for the amateur squad, WV West Frisia in 2022.

The team posted about the tragic news on Monday on Facebook.

“While the circumstances of Mark’s passing are currently under investigation, we have received preliminary information that suggests it may have been due to a heart attack. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to gather all the facts and provide the necessary support to Mark’s family during this painful period,” the caption read. “Mark was an incredible individual and a cherished member of our team. He had a remarkable spirit, always ready to lend a hand behind the scenes with his infectious smile and warm-hearted nature. His presence brightened our days, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.”
