Emily Batty and Derek Zandstra win Sudbury Canada Cup

Canada’s top mountain bikers convened in Sudbury, Ont., for the penultimate round of the 2014 Canada Cup XC series.

Sandra Walter came into the race leading the points standings. Racing for Liv/giant Canada, the B.C.-based Walter was up against stiff competition in the form of World Cup racer and 2013 Canadian national champion Emily Batty.

Riding for Trek Factory Racing, Batty won the women’s race with a healthy margin of one minute, 31 seconds ahead of Walter.

Scott-3Rox rider Mikaela Kofman finished a secure third overall, nearly a minute over Cindy Montambault of Équipe du Quebéc. Fellow Quebec racer Catherine Fleury finished fifth t round out the podium.

Absent from the field was Catharine Pendrel, who was recently competing in the BC Bike Race.

The 2013 men’s Canadian champion Derek Zandstra led a Scott-3Rox one-two finish in the men’s race. Teammate Cameron Jette finished a close second, just 0:18 back from Zandstra.

Evan McNeely, riding for Norco, finished third. Léandre Bouchard of Devinci/Ekoi finished fourth, ahead of Evan Guthrie, also riding for Norco.

Batty’s coach and husband Adam Morka finished sixth in the men’s race, just seconds down from the podium.

Geoff Kabush did not contest the race, enjoying a short break before Canadian national championships this Saturday.

The Canadian National Championship mountain bike XC races take place this weekend, at Hardwood Hills in Ontario.
