February officially belongs to Astana

Hot squad stumbles at Sunday's UAE Tour team time trial

Last week Canadian Cycling Magazine reported on Astana’s impressive eight day streak in which the team tallied eight victories. Astana’s streak continues, and the squad has now won six consecutive stage races over the course of 15-days. Previous to 2019, it took the squad 713-days to win six stages races.

Sunday saw Astana’s Dane Jakob Fuglsang wrap up the 65th Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol title, with Spanish teammate Jon Izagirre the runner-up and Pello Bilbao fourth overall. On Thursday, Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko was crowned the Tour of Oman champion after winning three of the six stages.

Fantastic February
February 10: Jon Izagirre wins 70th Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Pello Bilbao third
February 15: LL Sanchez wins 39th Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia, Bilbao third
February 17: Angel Lopez wins 2nd Colombia 2.1
February 17: Gorka Izagirre wins 4th Tour de la Provence
February 21: Alexey Lutsenko wins 10th Tour of Oman
February 24: Jakob Fuglsang wins 65th Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Del Sol, Jon Izagirre third

Canadian Hugo Houle played a role in both the Tour of Oman and the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana triumphs. He’s slated to race the WorldTour one day race Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday before supported a strong lineup–both Izagirres, Lopez and Sanchez–at Paris-Nice starting March 10.

This wicked tear might be coming to an end, as the outfit didn’t have a very good team time trial in the WorldTour’s UAE Tour opener. Jumbo-Visma earned the fastest time, with Primož Roglič pulling on the first leader’s jersey. Astana was 15th, +0:43.
