Robin Clegg, the three-time Olympic biathlete, has joined M1 Pro Cycling, the wing of M1 Sports Management that is working to bring a new continental team and pro continental or World Tour team to Canada. His duties will centre on developing sponsorships for the future teams.

In May, M1 Sports Management CEO Mark Ernsting announced his plans to develop a Canadian continental team for 2015. Currently Canada has two continental teams, Garneau-Quebecor and Silber Pro Cycling. Ernsting and his M1 Pro Cycling advisory board, which includes members of Cycling Canada, also have plans to develop a pro continental or WorldTour squad in as early as 2018. M1 Pro Cycling would maintain both the continental team and its higher-level sibling.

While Clegg is known as a biathlete, he is an avid cyclist and has experience in the world of corporate partnerships. “Upon my retirement from the sport of biathlon, I developed a passion for cycling. I am excited about this opportunity where I can use my business background in a sport environment that will have a positive impact on Canadian cyclists.” Clegg also rides on Team H&R Block, a development squad managed by M1 Sports Management. Earlier this month, he participated in B.C.’s provincial championship road race.

“I was encouraged when I spoke with Robin about having him join the management team,” Ernsting said, “because of the corporate network that he brings to the table and his intuitive understanding of sponsorship activation. It was very important for me to find someone that understands how to develop, build and maintain sponsorship partnerships for the growth and long term success of the program.”
