Four cyclists struck, killed in two Quebec accidents

In three days, four cyclists were killed on Quebec roads

Another cyclist died Saturday night in Quebec bringing to four the number of riders killed by motorists in only three days. A 57-year-old cyclist had been riding on the shoulder of Hwy. 117 near the community of Val-Morin, about 90 km northwest of Montreal Saturday night when he was struck by a car. He died several hours later in hospital.

Quebec police said a blood-alcohol test showed the 44-year-old female driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time and they confirmed she will be charged with impaired driving.

Just two days earlier, three cyclists were killed and three more injured when they were struck by a pickup truck southeast of Montreal. The group was from the Club de Triathlon St. Lambert and were on their way to a weekend of training at the University of Sherbrooke.

Three female cyclists – Sandra de la Garza Aguilar, 36, Christine Deschamps, 44, and Lyn Duhamel, 39 – died and three other cyclists, including two women and one man, were seriously injured but are expected to survive. Police said alcohol was not a factor in that crash.
