From mountain biking to the national road race

Even without a fuelling strategy, Antoine Caron survives the championships

Canadian mountain biker Antoine Caron traded knobby tires for slicks this past Saturday to contest the men’s road cycling national championships, in Saint-Georges, Que.

Riding as an independent, Caron was on Twitter reaching out for someone to help him at the feeding station.

During a race that blew apart early—the decisive break happened in the first 30 km of a nearly 200-km event—Caron managed to hang onto a peloton that became broken and bruised before ultimately falling apart completely.

Caron finished the race in 38th position overall, and 16th in the under-23 division.

Only 43 riders finished the race, out of 116 entrants.

The race was won by Zach Bell. The under-23 division title went to Antoine Duchesne, who finished third overall.
