Gold for Ethan Powell at track worlds

Ethan Powell stormed to his first world championship title on Friday, taking gold in a series of bold attacks in the junior men’s points race.

The Waterloo, Ont. junior lapped the field twice in the points race, putting himself at the top of the leader board with 53 points. Italy’s Juan David Sierra followed close behind, earning a silver medal with 50 points. Danill Kazakov (Neutral) earns bronze with 41 points.

“I spent the first half of the race conserving as much as possible, waiting for everyone else to tire out,” Powell said, explaining his winning strategy. “In the third quarter of the race, I gave my all and once I knew I was in contention it was all or nothing to the end, so I just held on and I was able to make it work. I’m super stoked for this win, it’s unbelievable. I’m thankful to everyone in Canada, especially my home team KW Cycling for all the help throughout the past few years.”

Powell’s win adds to his bronze medal won as part of the Men’s team pursuit on Thursday racing with Charles Bergeron, Justin Roy and Kaden Colling and Albert Taylor.

Powell recently raced junior road world championships in Glasgow, Scotland along with fellow Canadians Nora Linton and Charles Bergeron. In Cali, he is part of a team of 10 young Canadians chasing results on the boards.
