Hamilton’s Cannon Street bike lane expected to cost $1.6 million

The city of Hamilton is considering spending $1.6 million, spread over three years, to install a two-way bike lane along Cannon Street.

According to a story in the CBC, a staff report concluded that it would cost $598,000 to build the lanes and a 25 per cent contingency fund of $149,000. In addition, it will cost $242,990 per year, including a 10 per cent contingency fund, to operate the lanes.

The general issues committee will vote on the staff report on Wednesday.

The city will close one traffic lane along Cannon Street in order to accommodate the two-way bike lane. A portion will be separated, from Sherman Street to Bay Street, and include a barrier to traffic along with green paint on the lanes.

The city is pushing to create bicycle-friendly streets and healthier transportation.
