Highlights: Ruby West sweeps NBX Gran Prix of ‘Cross

Canadian under-23 champion doubles up in Warwick, Rhode Island

Resplendent in her under-23 Canadian national cyclocross champions jersey, Ruby West of Dundas, Ont. who ride for Cannondale-cyclocrossworld.com swept the weekend at the NBX Gran Prix of ‘Cross in Warwick, Rhode Island.

On day 1, She got the holeshot and was joined at the head of the race by Arley Kemmerer (Fearless Femme Racing) and Rebecca Fahringer (Stan’s NoTubes). The trio rode together for the first part of the race but a stumble by Fahringer in a sandy corner allowed West to gain a little gap. Then it was all about drilling it and establishing a lead.

West held a gap to the line though Kemmerer was strong in the corners while West laid down the power on the straights. West would take the win with plenty o time to raise her arms to salute the crowd. Kemmerer rolled over the line eight seconds later in second while Cassie Maximenko (Van Dessel/Atom Composite Wheels) would overtake Fahringer for third.

Jeremy Powers (Aspire Racing) won his first UCI race of the season in the men’s elite event.

On Sunday, West lined-up wearing the Vittoria Series under-23 woen’s leaders jersey. Again, West got off the startline fastest but a front group of four rode together early. West, Fahringer, Maximenko and Kemmerer were all there.

Eventually, West and Fahringer got away and the American put the pressure on. At one point she held a four second lead on West. On the final lap, West brought Fahringer. attacked and opened up a lead on the spent American that went out to seven seconds. Fahringer had a mechanical and her race for the win ended with West taking her second win in a row.

Fahringer chased hard and finished second with Maximenko edging out Kemmerer for third.
