‘I’m good!’ President Biden takes a ride – and a fall – in Delaware

POTUS uninjured, but toe cages claim another victim

U.S. President Joe Biden is well-known for his cycling, even at one point considering bringing a Peloton into the oval office. On Saturday, the 79-year-old was wrapping up a ride with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden in Rehoboth Beach in Delaware when he rolled up to a group of press to answer questions.

As he rolled to a stop, the President couldn’t get his foot out of the toe-cage, and slowly tipped over.

Biden quickly popped back up, declared “I’m good!” and added “I keep on meaning to take these things off,” with a kick at the toe cage, “I got my foot caught in it.”

If we learn two things from this incident, it’s that even Presidents get stuck in toe cages, and never put off planned bike maintenance.

Biden is far from the first victim of toe cages. Any cyclist that started riding in the 90s, and many more since has suffered the indignity of getting a foot stuck in the strap-and-cage system.

My personal moment with toe straps happened in downtown Victoria, during the college fixie phase of my riding, when I pulled up to a red light in the height of tourist season, couldn’t get a foot loose and slowly tipped over onto the sidewalk. Thankfully there was no press corps present to document the moment. Just one guy who sarcastically pointed noted “wow, you look really cool right now.”

No one asked the President if it was his first time getting stuck in the toe cages. But if the avid cyclist made it to almost 80 without getting his foot trapped until now, bravo Mr. President.
