Injured rider sues organizers, provincial body for $20M

A cyclist injured in an Ontario road race last year is suing the organizers and the provincial governing body for $20 million.

A cyclist injured in the 2010 Good Friday Road Race near Hamilton, Ont., is suing the organizers and the provincial governing body for $20 million.

You can read the Hamilton Spectator article here.

Christopher Uy was riding in his first-ever road race when there was a sudden deceleration in the peloton. Uy braked too hard, went over the handlebars and suffered head injuries.

Uy hasn’t been able to work since and says his personality has changed.

The lawsuit alleges the Hamilton Cycling Club and the Ontario Cycling Association allowed too many participants in the race, failed to make the course safe and didn’t adequately warn Uy of the danger.

None of the allegations have been proven in court and the HCC and OCA have yet to file statements of defence.

The 2011 Good Friday Road Race is set to take place April 23 on a slightly different course, though the changes have nothing to do with the lawsuit.
