Beginning this month, mountain bikers have a new—and versatile—helmet to add to their post-holiday wish list, when the Rex, made by Kask, becomes available in North American and Asian markets.

Judging by its specifications, it’s a marriage of protection and comfort, giving riders in disciplines ranging from cross-country to enduro and even casual off-road riding robust protection against the worst that each terrain can offer. Importantly, of course, it’s also lightweight. Helmets intended to serve such a purpose can sometimes be bulky, weighing down a rider’s neck. In this case, the Rex is well-moulded to a rider’s head with its design, matching the contours of the skull, and the result is a stable, streamlined and—most importantly—effective piece of headgear.

Rolling down a bumpy, precipitous trail, there’s nothing worse than feeling like a helmet intended to keep you protected might flop uselessly to one side with a particularly pronounced jostle. The octo-fit aspect of the Rex is designed to avoid that. Supports integrated into the helmet oscillate freely, fitting any head shape, with skeletal brackets supporting that function—all while keeping the design light.

There’s also, of course, the airy aspect of the Rex.

With 20 built-in vents, the Rex allows for maximum airflow, something that riders in warmer, more humid climates will find advantageous. Sweat evaporation is also aided by this design, making the helmet an effectively temperature-managing piece of gear for mountain bikers. The use of MIT technology, meanwhile, adds muscle to the shell keeping the most important part of your body protected: your brain. With a polycarbonate layer covering the top, base and back of the shell, the Rex has all the strength of a much heavier helmet.
