On Saturday, the team Campana Imballaggi Geo&Tex Trentino announced the death of 17-year-old Italian cyclist Jacopo Venzo following a crash at a race in Austria. The incident took place on a descent during the first stage of the Junioren Rundfahrt on Friday. Venzo was immediately airlifted to the Kepler clinic in Linz by a rescue helicopter, but unfortunately, he couldn’t recover from his injuries and died. In light of the tragedy, the race scheduled for Saturday was canceled.

“With tears in our eyes and devastated hearts we announce that our junior Jacopo Venzo has left us,” the team posted on Facebook. “The boy had been the victim of a very bad fall yesterday on the downhill during the first stage of the Tour of Upper Austria. Jacopo was an extraordinary young man with a future all to write in sports and especially in life, and for that it hurts even more. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected, and we thank everyone who will make us feel their support.”

The junior’s death comes just over a month after Gino Mäder died on a high-speed descent in the Giro d’Italia.
