Jonas Vingegaard breaks down after Dauphiné win about Annecy knife attack

Jonas Vingegaard put professional cycling into perspecitve following his win at the Critérium du Dauphiné on Thursday. In the post-race interview, he was asked how he felt about the race.

“Of course, I’m very happy with the win,” the Jumbo-Visma rider said. “But I also think on a day like today, with what happened in Annecy, what happened in cycling doesn’t really matter. My thoughts are with all the families.”

Jonas Vingegaard takes control of Critérium du Dauphiné with solo victory

On Thursday, four children and two adults are injured following a knife attack in Annecy, a city in the French Alps. The children were aged 22 months to three years old.

Vingegaard later told Danish television, TV2, that the area has a personal connection. “It’s terrible and comes a little close to home,” he said. “It’s someone who attacked small children. Annecy is a city that I visit from time to time.”

With the win, the Jumbo-Visma rider takes the lead. His countryman, Mikkel Berg (UAE) was in yellow at the start of the stage.

“It was a really hard day, but the team did a good job. And then I’m on my own before the last climb, but I couldn’t match Jonas,” Bjerg told TV 2 Sport shortly after the race.
