Kabush takes hot Sea Otter

Plaxton follows short track win with third place, two Canadians on women's podium

Geoff Kabush (Scott-3Rox Racing) made it a Canadian elite men’s double in the Sea Otter cross-country races by winning the long event in the searing heat of Monterey, California. Kabush, who had taken third place in the short track contest that compatriot Max Plaxton (Specialized) won, rode away from the bunch on the exposed climb. It was Kabush’s third win after victories in 2005 and 2007.

Plaxton flipped Friday’s result by coming in third while former Canadian national champion Chris Sheppard placed sixth.

The Luna Pro Team dominated the top five of the women’s race, with American Georgia Gould soloing to her third victory with a sizable gap of 1:55 over teammate Catharine Pendrel. Emily Batty (Subaru-Trek), last year’s short track champion, surged ahead of Specialized’s Lea Davison (USA) to complete the podium. Amanda Sin (Scott-3Rox Racing) finished 13th.

Out of the 12 podium steps in the four elite cross-country races, Canadians stood on seven.
