Leipheimer nips Cunego in Tour de Suisse’s final time trial

Levi overcomes a 1:59 deficit in 32.1 km

In a nail-biting finale to the Tour de Suisse, American Levi Leipheimer overtook race leader Damiano Cunego in the final individual time trial. Radioshack’s time-trial monster overcame a 1:59 deficit over 32.1 km to nip Cunego by four seconds and win his first Tour de Suisse. The Italian Cunego, who had led the race for several day, was crushed at the finish line, the biggest stage race victory since his 2004 Giro d’Italia title ripped from his hands. “I’m sorry, man,” Leipheimer offered as Cunego shook his hand. The winner of the stage, not surprisingly, was Fabian Cancellara. The Rabobank revelation Steven Kruijswijk rounded out the final podium.

The Tour de Suisse is the last big Tour de France warm-up race. Bradley Wiggins won the Dauphiné Libéré, the other traditional TdF warm-up.

Ryder Hesjedal retained his 20th place on GC after placing 26th in today’s ITT.
