Light Up Your Life promotes bike safety in Saskatoon

Saskatoon Cycles and the Saskatoon Police Services are making an effort to promote bike safety awareness with a new Light Up Your Life campaign. One of the ways the campaign will help educate and engage the cycling community in safer bike riding practices is by handing out free bike lights starting on May 1, through the spring months.

“The Light Up Your Life campaign is a first step in a long-term program to increase awareness about cycling safety and engage the cycling/driving community in safety education,” said Sharon Elder, Saskatoon Cycles bike valet co-ordinator. “Providing proper lighting for cycles is a simple way to increase visibility on our roads and to promote cycling safety in our community. We are all stakeholders when on the roads, safety is vital.”

The free lights are intended to help cyclist obey a Saskatoon bylaw that enforces the use of a front bike light and a rear reflector 30 minutes after sunset and before sunrise, and in low-visibility conditions, such as fog.

Local news outlet CKOM reported on Friday that the Saskatoon police will hand out $50 tickets to anyone caught in violation of the bylaw starting Aug. 1.
