Louis Meintjes suffers extensive sunburning through jersey on training ride

South African gets burnt through mesh kit

Louis Meintjes

While many Canadians would do just about anything for a bit of warm sun in the middle of winter, South African Louis Meintjes had the opposite problem on a recent training ride in his home country. Meintjes posted a photo of his extensively sunburn back on social media with the caption, “rookie mistake.”

While the Team Dimension Data riders back was minimally protected from the sun by his bib short straps and heart rate monitor, the rest was bright red following the ride. The mesh of the team jersey fabric was imprinted onto his skin by the scorching sun. While mesh jerseys have gained popularity because of how well they ventilate, Meintjes isn’t the first rider to get burnt in this manner.

Former world time trial champion Rachel Neylan reacted to the image responding, “Louiiiiiis! Has your Aussie friend not taught you anything?” While others found the humour in the burn.

Others were more sympathetic offering advice to cure the burn.

Meintjes is on the verge of beginning his second stint with the Dimension Data program after two years at  UAE Team Emirates (formally Lampre-Merida). He is scheduled to race the Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta in February followed by Tirreno-Adriatico, Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, the Tour of the Alps before riding the Giro d’Italia for the first time. Meintjes finished eight a the 2018 Tour de France and the Critérium du Dauphiné.
