Marianne Vos wins seventh elite cyclocross world title in Holland

Holland’s Marianne Vos won her seventh elite women’s cyclocross title at the UCI cyclocross world championships held in Hoogerheide on Saturday.

She took control of the race during the opening lap, separating herself from the rest of her competitors and gaining over a minute on runner-up Eva Lechner from Italy and Helen Wyman from Great Britain.

UCI World Cup series winner Katie Compton went into the race as one of the favourites, however, a bad start followed by a crash early in the race caused her to lose valuable time and she ended up in ninth place, nearly three minutes behind Vos.

Belgium’s Thijs Aerts won the junior men’s race after breaking away from a small group that included his teammates, runner-up Yannick Peeters and third placed Jelle Schuermans.

Willem Boersma was the top placed Canadian in the race finishing 28th, followed by Mason Burtnik in 43rd and Sean Germaine in 49th place.

The under-23 and elite men’s races will be held on Sunday in Hoogerheide, Netherlands.
