Matej Mohorič gave an absolutely incredible post-race interview
The Slovenian took an emotional win
Matej Mohorič beat Kasper Asgreen in a photo finish on Friday but his post-race interview was the winner of the day. The Bahrain-Victorious rider has won Tour de France stages before, as well as the 2022 Milano – San Remo, but this victory was particularly emotional. His Swiss teammate Gino Mäder died after a terrible crash at the Giro d’Italia, and it was clear that the fallen rider was on his mind.
The Slovenian came to the line with Asgreen and Ben O’Connor, managing to stay clear of the chase group behind. O’Connor, who is no sprinter, tried to attack in the final kilometre but was caught, so it came down to a two-man sprint. It seemed like the Dane would take a second win in as many days, but Mohorič just squeaked by.
After the race, the winner gave an incredible interview.
“It means a lot. It’s hard and cruel to be a pro cyclist. You sacrifice so much, your family does too and then you realize everyone is so so strong. Sometimes you feel you don’t belong here. I followed Asgreen and tried my best for Gino and for the team. Everyone works so hard, the mechanics, the physios,” He said. “I felt for Ben who had no chance and felt like I betrayed Kasper but in cycling you just want to win. I feel so many things right now. I know how a Tour de France stage win changes your life and I wish everyone could win a stage in the Tour de France.”
